1. Historical Significance

Mather Airport was originally established as a military base in 1918 and served as Mather Field, primarily for training pilots during World War I and World War II. It was named in honor of Second Lieutenant Carl Spencer Mather, a World War I pilot who lost his life during a training flight.

2. Transition to Civilian Use:

After the military operations ceased, Mather Field was transitioned into civilian use and became Mather Airport in 1988. Today, it is operated by the Sacramento County Department of Airports and serves as a public airport, offering a range of aviation services to the community.

3. Location

Mather Airport is situated approximately 20 miles east of downtown Sacramento, making it conveniently accessible to both the city and the surrounding regions.

4. Facilities:

The airport features a single runway, Runway 4/22, which is approximately 11,300 feet long and can accommodate a variety of aircraft, including commercial, cargo, and general aviation.

5. Cargo Operations:

One of the key functions of Mather Airport is its cargo operations. It serves as a significant gateway for air cargo transportation in Northern California, facilitating the movement of goods and products throughout the region.
